IMBCS racing begins in 3 weeks!
This is our first article from Zoom Performance Level 1 Coach Liz Van Houweling. Zoom Performance has partnered with IMBCS for 2016 by becoming one of our sponsors for the series.
What to Expect at Your First Mountain Bike Race
Toeing the start line for your first mountain bike race can be rather intimidating! I came from racing criteriums for 5 years and was still fearful about the idea of RACING mountain bikes. To outsiders, the thought of going as fast as you can while weaving in and out of trees, bombing down bumpy descents, and maneuvering around other riders can be frightening. I promise that it is not really as scary as it sounds!

Iowa Mountain Bike Championship Series had a total of 111 Youth Entry Fees during the 2015 season (JUNIORS). Many of those young racers come from homes where the expense of paying a mountain bike race entry fee is simply not affordable. We are asking for donations this year to help cover the costs of the entry fees for our under age 18 racers in Iowa. We ask that those of you who have the financial means to make a donation to help cover the cost of our up and coming youth here in Iowa to race their mountain bikes at one of our IMBCS events to donate what you feel is appropriate.
Each JUNIOR entry fee averages $20 per race, so if you want to sponsor one entry fee, two entry fees, 5 entry fees, or even more – it would help insure that our next generation of mountain bike racers here in Iowa have a chance to race their mountain bikes in our great state.
We have set a goal of raising $2500 based on the number of racers we had in the under age 18 categories during the 2015 season. The donated money will be used soley to cover youth entry fees for the JUNIORS and in the case of those who need it, a one day USA Cycling License. IMBCS is now under the 501 (c) (3) status, so your donation will be tax deductible.
The IMBCS Advisory Board, the parents of youth racers, and the individual host race organizations will be very thankful for your generous contribution – especially if it means seeing the determined faces of Iowa’s youth out on our mountain bike trails during 2016 racing their bikes.

IMBCS racers will have the chance to compete at three levels of USA Cycling Mountain Bike Championships this year – State, Midwest Regional, and Nationals.
The USA Cycling State Championship here in Iowa will be the first chance for this level of competition and is one of our scheduled races for the season at Whiterock Conservancy. The cost and travel time factor for those who qualify to go to the Nationals may not allow many to do that this year. However, much closer to home provides those who are willing to travel to our neighboring state of Wisconsin the opportunity to take part in the inaugural USA Cycling Midwest Regional Mountain Bike Championship in Wisconsin. You can toe the line against riders from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin at that event.
Here are the three opportunities for IMBCS racers to participate in USA Cycling Mountain Bike Championships this year:
July 2-3 USA Cycling Iowa Mountain Bike Championship at Whiterock Conservancy in Coon Rapids, Iowa.
July 12-17 USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championship at Mammoth Mountain in Mammoth Lakes, California.
July 22-24 USA Cycling Midwest Regional Mountain Bike Championship at Cascade Mountain in Portage, Wisconsin.
