Sugar Bottom Scramble Race Recap…

Yesterday was the annual running of the Sugar Bottom Scramble at Sugar Bottom Recreation Area hosted by ICORR, and Goosetown Racing. Race Director Mike Frasier made the call on Saturday to delay the start of all races by 2 hours to allow for recent rains to soak in and the course to dry out.

Good call Mike! We were all treated to hero dirt, and delicious Sugar Bottom singletrack because of it…

Sugar Sweet Singletrack

Gorgeous blue skies, and temperatures around 70 degrees made for some of the best racing conditions IMBCS has had all season.

Blue Sky!

On a personal note, it was great to see Landon Beachy make it to the race (the 2 hour delay allowed that) and line up with the CAT II crowd. Landon qualified as our eldest statesmen racer yesterday and was all smiles enjoying the course…

LandonReturns!

Landon is a great guy and we can all only hope we’re still out mixing it up at an IMBCS race in our mid 60s!!!!

In total, 118 racers toed the line for the competitive XC races, and in addition, there were 20 who participated in the Kids Race.

Speaking of the Kids Race, it started the day off at Sugar Bottom. They get to ride the beginner loop of singletrack and it is always a great way to introduce your children to mountain bike racing. My son and daughter did their first race at Sugar Bottom way back a dozen or so years ago.

The group got off to a good start…

JUNIORS Start

By the way, we had 22 age-18-and-under racers who were able to take advantage of the IMBCS Youth Entry Fee Fund that so many of you have graciously donated to this year. If you have not had an opportunity to help “pay it forward” for our up and coming racers by contributing to the fund, there is still time to do so. Any remaining funds will be carried over to next year for our age-18-and-under racers.

Our Podium for JUNIOR overall went to Brady Bengston, Samuel Errthum, and Caden Jondle…

From the looks of the photographs, and the faces of all the racers I saw, there were smiles a plenty for the weather, trail conditions, and sheer enjoyment of a nice IMBCS race day at Sugar Bottom…

Next to line up at Sugar Bottom were the advanced categories with a total field of 19 in the Cat I race…

CAT I Starting Line

Nathan Kullbom bested the Cat I Men’s field with a hard fought battle for four laps between he and Saturday’s State Road Race 70 mile leg weary Kevin McConnell. Kevin came in 2nd, followed by Michael Maney, Aaron Robnett, and—in his first ever mountain bike race—Brian Baumhover.

Former Iowa resident Robin Williams made the trek down from Minnesota with Kyle and their son (all three raced!) and took top honors on her former home course in the CAT I Women’s field, with Liz Van Houweling, Emily Robnett, and Karmen Woelber all earning a paycheck for the day’s effort…

CAT I Women's Podium

The COMP field had 22 guys duking it out for three laps on what we all considered perfect trail conditions. The top five overall podium was in a hotly contested battle up until the end. A crash worked out the final order of who bested the rest of the field, and it included Scott Shellman, Michael Colleran, Bryan Wenzel, Dane Miller (bouncing back from his water bottle hand up DQ last weekend), and Michael Vittetoe,…

The Cat II Women’s podium featured triumphant smiles from all with Mary McInnis Meyer taking the win, Jacqueline Maney grabbing second, followed by Kathleen Porter to round out our trio bringing home the World of Wheels cash bacon…

Kudos to Mike Frasier, Goosetown Racing, ICORR, all the volunteers, our USA Cycling Officials, and of course all of our local sponsors as well as IMBCS sponsors for combining efforts to make the Sugar Bottom Scramble 2016 a success.

Next up is our final event of the 2016 IMBCS racing season: IMBCS #10 The Mullet Fall Classic at Lake Ahquabi State Park. This is not only the end of the season mountain bike race, but also our end of the year IMBCS party. A super fast race course with climbing, yet worthy of all levels to give it a try from beginner to expert. Fat Bike Category, Trail Run, and a Tandem Category (if we have any show up and register day of race) are also included. The post race fun includes a hog roast, DJ, Oskar Blues beer, Honest Tea, Beverages from Voss Distributing, and series points awards and prizes from our sponsors (must be present to win any of the prize drawings). Everyone gets a t-shirt, cap, hat, or pint mug while supplies last (I should have enough of something for everyone). Not to worry, all non-racers friends and family can also partake of the party and hog roast (suggested donation will be asked for the non racing crowd).
